Le Col des Aravis , a special place not far from the hotel.

On the border between Savoie and Haute Savoie 10 kms only from the hotel La Croix St Maurice, the Col des Aravis is one of the mythical Alpine passes. At 1486m it is the lowest of the Aravis passes. It has featured 40 times in the Tour de France and is climbed every year by cyclists in the Time-Megève-Mont Blanc race. This pass with its amazing backdrop is a must for a cycle ride. During your stay in Le Grand Bornand, give your lycra an airing and take on the ascent of the Col. From La Clusaz , the next holiday village along from Le Grand Bornand, you follow the D909 road to the Col. Experienced road cyclists or cross country bikers will all be able to tackle this with relative ease as the gradient is 5-6% , with a short section of 8%. Having summited, pause for the view and visit the small chapel of St Anne, built in 1624, a prayer at the entrance asks St Anne to protect travellers.

A walkers’ playground

The Col des Aravis is loved by keen walkers . From the top of the pass, the Chalet du Curé path is one the whole family can attempt. Follow the trail opposite the chapel which will soon lead you to an orientation table from where you can marvel at the white peak of Mont Blanc, the Aiguille du Midi, and the Aiguille Verte. Continuing your climb, you reach the highest point on your walk – the Chalet du Curé ( the priest’s chalet ). There you will find not only an impressive view of the Mont Blanc massif but also see the Vanois and Beaufortain ranges. The way back is through the peaceful alpine meadows with rhododendrons and bilberries .
